By Tamara Conniff

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Sales of rap albums jumped 20% during 2000 -- the biggest increase for any musical genre, according to SoundScan's year-end music industry report. Total music sales for the year were up 4% over 1999.

Alternative, R&B and New Age albums showed increased sales of 8%-12%, while other genres declined slightly. Classical was down 5%, country dropped 3%, jazz slumped 5%, Latin was down 1%, gospel/Christian dropped 6%, and soundtrack sales fell 16%. The top-selling soundtrack for 2000 was Hollywood Records' companion to "Mission: Impossible 2," which sold 1.3 million units and was the 56th biggest-selling album of the year.

The top 10-selling albums of 2000 were 'N Sync's "No Strings Attached" (9.9 million), Eminem's "The Marshall Mathers LP" (7.9 million), Britney Spears' "Oops! ... I Did It Again" (7.89 million), Creed's "Human Clay" (6.58 million), Santana's "Supernatural" (5.85 million), the Beatles' "Beatles 1" (5 million), Nelly's "Country Grammar" (5 million), Backstreet Boys' "Black & Blue" (4.2 million), Dr. Dre's "Dr. Dre 2001" (4 million) and Destiny's Child's "Writing's on the Wall" (3.8 million). Eight of the top 10 albums received nominations for next month's 43rd annual Grammy Awards.

Universal Music Group came out as the top label group for 2000. UMG's market share of current albums for 2000 is 28%, followed by BMG Entertainment (19.4%), Sony Music (15.4%), Warner Music Group (13.5%) and EMI (8.7%).

SoundScan said 88 albums sold at least 1 million units, and 202 albums sold 500,000 units or more.

Internet sales took their share of the market. For 2000, 1.6% of total album sales came via the Web. The reported increase in Internet sales is in part attributable to Amazon.com's becoming a SoundScan reporter.

Founded in 1991, SoundScan is the entertainment industry's main information system for point-of-purchase sales data. The top-selling albums of SoundScan's nine-year history are Alanis Morissette's "Jagged Little Pill" (13.7 million), Shania Twain's "Come on Over" (13.6 million), Metallica's self-titled release (12.4 million), Backstreet Boys' "Millennium" (11.7 million), "The Bodyguard" soundtrack (11.6 million), Santana's "Supernatural" (10.6 million), Celine Dion's "Falling Into You" (10.3 million), Britney Spears' "... Baby One More Time" (9.98 million), "No Strings Attached" (9.93 million) and the soundtrack to "Titanic" (9.89 million).
